Empowerment Monday: Why Clarity Comes Before Confidence

Why Clarity Comes Before Confidence

Most leaders think confidence is the missing piece. If I just felt more confident, this would be easier.

But in my experience, confidence isn’t the starting point - clarity is.

Confidence usually shows up after you know what you’re doing, where you’re going, and what you’re asking of others. When things feel messy or unclear, no amount of positive thinking fixes that. People hesitate because they’re confused, not because they lack confidence.

Teams don’t need you to be the loudest voice in the room. They need direction. They need to know what matters right now, what success looks like, and what decision is actually being made.

Here’s what I see all the time: leaders wait to speak up, decide, or move forward because they don’t feel confident yet. But that waiting creates more uncertainty, and uncertainty kills momentum.

Clarity changes everything. When you’re clear, people lean in. When expectations are clear, accountability gets easier. When priorities are clear, decisions speed up.

So try this this week: Before asking yourself, “Do I feel confident enough?” ask, “What’s the one thing that needs to be clear right now?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to provide the next clear step.

In my opinion, confidence is overrated.

Clarity is what actually moves people.

Energy Is A Leadership Strategy Most leaders spend their time thinking about strategy, metrics, and execution. Very few stop to consider the one thing influencing all three every single day: their energy. Not their time. Not their experience.Their energy. Because whether you realize it or not, your team doesn’t just hear what you say - they feel how you show up. And that feeling shapes how they respond, how they perform, and ultimately, what they produce. You’ve seen this before. Walk into a...

Reflection Saturday - Who Grew Because of Me This Week? It’s easy to end the week looking at a checklist. Projects completed.Meetings attended.Problems solved. But leadership isn’t ultimately measured by what you get done: it’s measured by who you build up. Here’s the hard truth: You can hit every target and still fall short as a leader if no one around you is growing. So pause for a moment and ask yourself: Who is better today because of my leadership this week? Did you: Coach someone...

Businessman holds mirror and looks at himself in the reflection

The Leadership Mirror Leadership has a way of revealing things about us that we may not always be ready to see. Every leader has moments when results, feedback, or team dynamics quietly hold up a mirror. Sometimes what we see in that reflection is encouraging. Other times it shows habits, blind spots, or patterns we didn’t realize were shaping our leadership. The challenge isn’t the mirror. The challenge is whether we’re willing to look into it. Many leaders say they want honest feedback. But...
