Reflection Saturday: What Assumption Did I Make That Needs Re-Examining?

Reflection Saturday: What Assumption Did I Make That Needs Re-Examining?

One of the most dangerous things a leader can do… is be certain without being curious.

This week, take a moment and think about the stories you told yourself.

About your team.
About a decision.
About a situation that didn’t go the way you expected.

Because here’s the truth: We don’t lead from reality nearly as often as we think. We lead from interpretation.

Someone missed a deadline… so we assume they’re not committed.
A team member pushed back… so we assume they’re difficult.
A meeting felt off… so we assume something bigger is wrong.

But assumptions are shortcuts. And while they’re fast… they’re often wrong.

Strong leaders don’t just make decisions.
They examine the lens those decisions are coming from.

So here are a few questions to sit with today:

  • What story did I create this week that I treated like fact?
  • What evidence actually supports that story and what contradicts it?
  • Have I been curious enough to ask, or did I just conclude?
  • How might this situation look from the other person’s perspective?
This isn’t about overthinking. It’s about leading with clarity instead of certainty.

Because when you challenge your assumptions, you create space for better conversations, stronger trust, and wiser decisions.

And sometimes… the breakthrough isn’t changing your team.

It’s changing the story you’ve been telling yourself about them.

Take a breath today. Revisit one assumption.
You might find there’s more truth, and more opportunity, on the other side of it than you expected.

Energy Is A Leadership Strategy Most leaders spend their time thinking about strategy, metrics, and execution. Very few stop to consider the one thing influencing all three every single day: their energy. Not their time. Not their experience.Their energy. Because whether you realize it or not, your team doesn’t just hear what you say - they feel how you show up. And that feeling shapes how they respond, how they perform, and ultimately, what they produce. You’ve seen this before. Walk into a...

Reflection Saturday - Who Grew Because of Me This Week? It’s easy to end the week looking at a checklist. Projects completed.Meetings attended.Problems solved. But leadership isn’t ultimately measured by what you get done: it’s measured by who you build up. Here’s the hard truth: You can hit every target and still fall short as a leader if no one around you is growing. So pause for a moment and ask yourself: Who is better today because of my leadership this week? Did you: Coach someone...

Businessman holds mirror and looks at himself in the reflection

The Leadership Mirror Leadership has a way of revealing things about us that we may not always be ready to see. Every leader has moments when results, feedback, or team dynamics quietly hold up a mirror. Sometimes what we see in that reflection is encouraging. Other times it shows habits, blind spots, or patterns we didn’t realize were shaping our leadership. The challenge isn’t the mirror. The challenge is whether we’re willing to look into it. Many leaders say they want honest feedback. But...
